It’s safe to say that we don’t live in the Stone Age anymore.
Gone are the days of gazing at primitive forms of entertainment such as TVs with antennas. Gone are the days of physically standing up and walking over to your TV to switch channels.
But we’re not as close into the future as Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: Space Odyssey or Will Smith’s I, Robot. We’re getting there, though.
But we’re definitely living in a world where smart homes exist and can be controlled through voice commands and our smartphones.
One household staple that’s benefitting from advanced technology, artificial intelligence, or machine learning is the primary source of our home entertainment, our television sets.
Are remote controls a dying breed? Or is artificial intelligence juicing up the way we control our TVs? Either way, the future of our viewing experience is here.
Smarter entertainment
With Netflix and other streaming services at the forefront, we’ve never seen such a tailored viewing experience. Netflix’s complex algorithms, without being too technical, offer other shows or films based on one’s viewing history.
Unlike cable TV’s preprogrammed viewing, Netflix’s home screen is customized to the user. The artificial intelligence that Netflix uses analyzes a user’s viewing data to provide close to accurate future suggestions.
Remember when you watched The Perks of Being a Wallflower one day and the next day you find yourself watching The Bling Ring? Is it fate? Is it Emma Watson starring in both movies? Is it because both films are a gem to watch? Netflix’s unique algorithms deliver shows that add a spark of joy into your life.
AI TV for the win
In 2018, LG’s AI-enabled TV ThinQ changed the way we watch TV. ThinQ uses voice commands to function, just like our smartphones. Turn the TV on or off, adjust the volume, or change the picture mode, the power is in your voice. LG’s AI TV also can be the hub of your smart home.
While LG’s leading the way, other major TV companies like Sony and Samsung are not far behind. Sony added Google Assistants which pretty much operates like LG’s ThinQ. With voice commands, there’s no more rhyme or reason to get off the couch or push remote control buttons.
Samsung’s artificial intelligence, on the other hand, can transform video into 8K. 4K TVs are so 2012. Now, you can enjoy watching your favorite TV show or movie in the highest possible resolution.
AI is revolutionizing the way humans interact with computers. Only time can tell what AI can offer us, but what we do know is that the more data there is out there, the more technology can improve the way we engage with TV and entertainment.
For now, we sit back and relax and enjoy the ride.
