Before we dive into a hole of the delicious and delightful world of donuts, we have to answer one question. Why do we celebrate National Doughnut Day?
We may never know whether donuts are either pastries or bread, but we can definitely find out why we celebrate every year. So, let’s glaze over it for a few seconds.
National Doughnut Day started in 1938 to honor The Salvation Army members in Chicago who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.
Today many shops celebrate National Doughnut Day by giving away free donuts. Who doesn’t love that?
Based on last year’s celebration, here’s a shortlist of places that offer free donuts on June 5, or at least provide irresistible deals. Precautionary advice: Please practice social distancing and wear a mask when attempting to procure these amazingly delicious goodies.
Dunkin’ Donuts
Last year, double Ds gave away a classic donut with a purchase of any beverage. Find the Dunkin’ closest to you.
Krispy Kreme
On the other hand, Krispy Kreme also gave away donuts for free, no purchase necessary. Mind blown! Locate the nearest Krispy Kreme.
Voodoo Doughnut
In 2019, instead of giving away free doughnuts, they sold Homer doughnuts for a dollar. Voodoo Doughnuts only have one location, and it’s in Universal CityWalk. Voodoo offers vegan options, FYI.
Here are other donut shops that offer vegan-friendly options: Blue Star Donuts, Whole Foods, Colorado Donuts, and Fōnuts.
Whether you do or donut partake in free doughnuts, we can’t stop you from buying these sweet, adoughrable treats. It’s probably even a better idea to support our local pink box donut shops in these rough days. We doughn’t only feed our cravings, but we’re helping small businesses keep their doors open.
Today, we can all go nuts for donuts!
